IHRA: Doing it with diesel

Why does John Robinson’s Top Dragster have a diesel engine?

Easy. “I own Texas Diesel Power, a diesel repair shop,” he says, “and I don’t know how to work on anything else!”

Obviously, Robinson, of Weatherford, Texas, knows his diesels, though. At the Good Vibrations Texas Nationals at San Antonio Raceway, Robinson clocked a run of 6.5709 seconds at 211.57 mph. Billowing black smoke, and with a sound completely different from anything else on the track,

We might just have us a race car!!!

Well, this was the big weekend where we got to unload the brand new hotrod out of the trailer & see what she’s got. It went above average & we are so excited. Never before have we built a car, took it to a NHRA divisional in Houston & got it up to speed in the same weekend, but we did it this weekend.

First pass I was anxious & flat out intimidated,

Whew!! What a thrashing…

…we have been through since December 29th. I’m pretty proud of all the people that have kicked things up a notch to get everything done. Here’s a quick checklist of all we did In this short amount of time:
1. Drive to Indy & pick up chassis … check
2. Figure out how to load a dragster in the top of a stacker trailer … check
3. Get funnycar motor & components pulled,

Well Darn!

We’re down here in Houston and found another crack in the frame that’s in a sketchy location. The car is not safe to run without a corrective repair. The torque of this motor whips the chassis around like a piece of spaghetti … part of it I guess. I’ll be down here the rest of the day and into tomorrow morning, visiting and helping of few of our fellow racers. Sorry we didn’t get to run this one folks!

A long ride home turns into a short ride home ….

This weekend was event number 10 out of 18 in Tulsa. The top dragster class is getting faster and faster each race, and keeping up with blown alcohol dragsters with our diesel-powered entry is getting tough. But it’s making this team push itself and the car to levels that we never dreamed of just 3 years ago. We have had to ramp the power up on this hotrod just to hang, and by doing so we have found a whole new set of weak links in the chassis and transmission.

NHRA Topeka Nationals

I just got back into the office from a great weekend of racing and wanted to reflect on how our weekend went. We rolled the rig into Topeka on Wednesday, found a hotel and crashed until the next morning. Thursday morning, we started our wellrehearsed drill of setting the pits up and getting the first tuneup on the car.

Houston, we have no problems….

Well I just got in from Houston, and I’m going to spend a little time with my awesome wife before hitting the grindstone again. The entire team is worn out from a very long weekend of racing and working on this hot rod … but it’s so worth it. This week we were down in Houston racing in the NHRA Spring Nationals. When it comes to racing, it’s about as big as it gets and we did awesome!
